Mikan

The mikan (also known as the satsuma mandarin) is a small Japanese citrus fruit. Created around the 15th century and grown throughout most of the country, it is very similar to the clementine. It has no seeds, a mild sweet flavour and a skin that peels easily. It is harvested in winter, especially in December, for maximum sweetness!

This citrus fruit is one of Japan’s most emblematic fruits. It used to be the most eaten fruit by the Japanese, and they still eat more than four kilos per capita every year… Only the banana, an imported product, has overtaken the mikan in their hearts.

It can be eaten raw, in juice, used in desserts or to thicken a sauce. It can also be found in spirits such as gin or mikanshu, a liqueur made from this citrus fruit!
