Soda & Ramune
Japan is full of amazing fizzy drinks like yuzu or plum ‘ume’ lemonades. You can find them in our shop!
Soda goes “shuwa shuwa
The Japanese have a unique expression for fizzy drinks: “Shuwa shuwa”. It’s actually an onomatopoeia used to describe the sound of bubbles rising and bursting on the surface of your glass. A useful term to describe the myriad of soft drinks that fill the shelves of all the street vending machines and other ‘konbini’, those quintessentially Japanese small convenience stores. It’s hard not to be impressed by these mysterious concoctions when you taste them for the first time.
The mad scientists of fizz
Of course, all these drinks do not rhyme with ‘terroir’ and ‘respect for the seasons’, but rather with ‘joy of experimentation’ and ‘extreme variety’. Japan, more than any other developed country, produces mountains of ‘novel’ and constantly ‘new’ products: Coca-Cola with added fibre or artificial strawberry and watermelon flavours, Pepsi with iced cucumber, liquid flan in a can (no joke)…
Let’s be sensible
We’ve decided not to venture into these lands and instead offer a selection of drinks that are more authentic and tasty (at least in our opinion): the famous ‘Ramune’ ball soda in many different flavours, lemonades with natural yuzu or plum ume pulp, drinks infused with aromatic herbs, a fizzy version of the legendary ‘Calpis’ lacto-fermented drink…
However, we are not ruling out a few excursions into the realm of strange sodas. Don’t hesitate to let us know which drinks you would like to see!
