Description

There are only two gins made exclusively from Japanese ingredients. The magnificent Sakurao Limited Gin is one of them. No fewer than 17 fresh botanicals from the gin’s birthplace, Hiroshima Prefecture, go into its composition.

These include a variety of Japanese citrus fruits, sakura cherry leaves, wasabi, green perilla and even oysters. None of these ingredients travel more than thirty kilometres from where they are grown to the Sakurao distillery. Their freshness is impeccable. The immense, crystalline flavours of this limited edition gin prove it beyond doubt.

A gin with marine influences

Sakurao Limited Gin oscillates between land and sea, between the minerality of freshly turned black earth and the fresh iodine of sea spray. Despite the large number of ingredients, all the aromas are clearly expressed in a broad, deep framework: citrus, spices, aromatic herbs… We recognise them all with a certain emotion.

This approach to tasting is largely foreign to us, but many Japanese consider the best spirits to be impressionistic: they transport you to a forgotten memory or a place you’ve never seen. Sakurao Limited Gin is undeniably a member of this family.

Fruit of the mountain

The Sakurao Distillery was founded in 1918. Back then it was called Chugoku, after the nearby mountain range of the same name. At that time it didn’t distil anything. Thanks to the extremely soft water and cold winds of the Chugoku mountains, which made this region famous among sake lovers, it produced high-quality vintages for several decades. Then it decided to branch out into strong spirits.

The Chugoku Brewery began this new adventure by producing shochu, a traditional Japanese grain or sweet potato spirit that we highly recommend. Then, in the 90s, it began producing whisky, launching the Togouchi brand. These now famous Canadian grain and Scotch malt whiskies, matured in a Japanese mountain tunnel, were an instant hit. Building on this success, Chugoku decided to branch out into gin in 2018, changing its name to Sakurao.

Since 2021, Sakurao has also been producing a whisky with 100% Japanese ingredients: Sakurao Japanese Single Malt Whisky.
